What to expect from your first OT session

What to expect from your first OT session

Your first occupational therapy (OT) session is about getting to know you and understanding what a typical day looks like. There is no pass or fail.

Before the session

You may receive a questionnaire about your daily routines, health history, and goals. Fill in what you can — it helps the OT prepare, but it is not mandatory.

During the session

The OT will usually visit your home or meet in a community setting. They will ask about:

  • Morning and evening routines
  • Cooking, cleaning, and self-care tasks
  • Work, study, or volunteer activities
  • Hobbies and interests
  • Any challenges you face day to day
  • They may also do a brief physical assessment looking at strength, range of movement, or sensory preferences.

    After the session

The OT writes a report summarising their findings and recommendations. This may include:

  • Suggested goals
  • Equipment or modifications
  • A therapy plan with estimated sessions
  • You will receive a copy and can ask questions at any time.
